What is a gable? Roof gables explained for homeowners
Last updated · Roof anatomy
Short answer: A gable is the triangular upper portion of a wall that sits under the two sloping sides of a dual-pitch roof. The gable end is that wall face; the sloping edges of the roof at that end are called the rakes.
Gable roof vs. hip roof
A classic gable roof has two sloping planes that meet at a ridge. The ends form triangles. A hip roof slopes on all sides down to the walls, so there is no triangular gable wall. Many homes mix both: a main hip with gable dormers, or a gable main roof with hip accents.
Parts that sit next to a gable
- Ridge — the horizontal peak where the two slopes meet.
- Rake — the sloping edge of the roof along the gable end (not the eave).
- Eave — the lower edge that usually holds the gutters.
- Soffit and fascia — underside and face board at the overhang; often where intake vents sit.
- Gable vent — a vent in the triangular wall. Ridge-and-soffit systems are usually preferred for balanced attic airflow; mixing gable vents with a ridge vent can short-circuit airflow if not designed carefully.
Why gables matter in storms
Gable ends present a flat wall to the wind. In high-wind regions (including parts of Florida under the Florida Building Code / HVHZ rules), gable-end bracing and proper sheathing attachment are common code and best-practice topics. Wind can also pry at poorly fastened rake edges and drip edge. That is separate from ice-dam rules that mainly affect cold-climate eaves.
Gable vs. other shapes you will hear on an estimate
- Dutch gable / gablet — a small gable sitting on a hip roof.
- Dormer — a projecting structure, often with its own little gable or shed roof.
- Cross-gable — two gable roofs intersecting, which creates valleys.
Local building codes vary. Always verify requirements with your local building department and follow the manufacturer's installation instructions for the products installed.

Frequently asked questions
What is a gable on a house?
It is the triangular part of the end wall under a two-sided sloping roof. The sloping roof edges at that end are the rakes.
Is a gable the same as a dormer?
No. A dormer projects from a sloping roof and often has its own small roof. A gable is the triangular end wall of a dual-pitch roof.
Are gable roofs better than hip roofs?
Neither is universally better. Gables are simpler and often cheaper; hips shed wind on all sides and have no tall gable wall. Local climate, style, and structure decide.
