My roof claim was denied: What are my next steps?
Last updated · Storm damage & insurance
Short answer: Get the denial reason in writing, re-read your policy, supply any missing documentation, ask about reinspection or appraisal clauses, and contact your state Department of Insurance. Colorado also gives a short window to cancel certain roofing contracts after a denial.[1]
Immediate checklist
- Save the denial letter and claim file notes.
- Compare cited exclusions (wear and tear, matching, cosmetic damage) to your policy language.
- Provide dated photos, NOAA storm-date context, and contractor findings if not already in the file.[3]
- Ask whether a second look / reinspection is available.
- Check whether your policy includes an appraisal clause for amount-of-loss disputes (appraisal addresses amount, not necessarily coverage).
- File a consumer complaint with your state DOI if needed.
Colorado cancel right after denial
If you signed a roofing contract that depends on insurance proceeds, C.R.S. § 6-22-104 provides a path to rescind within a short period after written notice that the claim was denied in whole or in part — read the statute for exact timing and deposit rules.[1]
This is general consumer information, not legal or insurance advice. Coverage, deadlines, and rates depend on your policy, your insurer, and your state's laws. Check your policy and contact your state's Department of Insurance if you have questions.

Frequently asked questions
Does appraisal force the insurer to cover the claim?
Appraisal typically disputes how much a covered loss is worth, not whether coverage exists. Read your policy.
Can I sue?
Possibly, subject to suit limitation periods and state law (see also Colorado 10-4-110.8 issues). Talk to a licensed attorney.
