Hail in farmington, kaysville, heber City and midway, Utah (september 2026): Free roof check
Storm dates and · Data updated November 5, 2026 · General information, not insurance or legal advice.
What happened: Two days of severe storms brought large hail to northern Utah in mid-September 2026. On the evening of September 17, the National Weather Service received a report of 1.5-inch (ping-pong-ball-size) hail in Midway in the Heber Valley. On the afternoon of September 18, storms crossed Davis County, with reports of 1.5-inch hail near Farmington and west Kaysville and up to 2 inches near Layton.[1][2] Hail damage to shingles is often hard to see from the ground, so many roofs that took hail have not been checked yet.

The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City also confirmed a brief tornado in the mountains east of Fruit Heights on September 18, with no reported damage, and its warning that afternoon covered Layton, Kaysville and Farmington.[3][4] Storm reports show where hail fell nearby. They are not a survey of your street, and they don't prove your roof was damaged.
How hail of this size affects a roof
Hail an inch or larger can bruise asphalt shingles, knock off the granules that protect them from sun, and dent gutters, vents and flashing. The damage often looks minor from the driveway and shows up later as leaks or faster aging. Look for dented gutters, downspouts, mailboxes or vents, and granules piling up at downspouts. Stay off the roof yourself. A roofer can check it safely and photograph what they find. See signs of hail damage on shingles.

Roof replacement cost in Davis and Wasatch counties
If a roof does need replacing, here are 2026 price ranges for a single-story home with a standard pitch and full tear-off. They use national installed-cost data[5][6][7] adjusted by the Mountain region's 2025 Cost vs Value index of 0.893.[8]
| Home size | Architectural shingles | Standing-seam metal |
|---|---|---|
| 1,500 sq ft (~18 squares) | $8,000–$17,500 | $16,500–$28,500 |
| 2,000 sq ft (~25 squares) | $10,700–$23,300 | $22,000–$38,000 |
| 2,500 sq ft (~31 squares) | $13,300–$29,200 | $27,500–$47,500 |
Two-story homes, steep roofs, and extra layers cost more. In snowy areas like the Heber Valley, code typically requires an ice barrier at the eaves, which adds to the materials list. For a number based on your own roof, use the free estimator.
Document it now
- Take dated photos of the roof, gutters, siding, windows, and any dents on vents or metal.
- Write down the storm date (September 17 for the Heber Valley, September 18 for Davis County) and when you first noticed any damage.
- Read your policy for claim deadlines. Only your insurer decides what is covered.
Beware of storm chasers
After a hailstorm, out-of-town crews often knock on doors. Utah requires roofing contractors to be licensed, so ask for the license number and check it with the Utah Division of Professional Licensing, get a written estimate, and never sign on the spot.[9] The license numbers for the contractors in our network are on our contractor licensing page. What homeowners say
I’m not one to post reviews but had to after this experience. I use to work with Statefarm Insurance in their fraud investigation unit and know every tactic roofing companies use. With that said, I got a guy who came to my door and offered a free roof inspection with [the contractor]. Knowing I don’t have damage due to walking my roof regularly, I figured I’d let the guy just to see what he’s about. Alex got on my roof and walked the entire thing taking photos and measurements. Anticipating a gimmick and sales approach once he came off the roof, he came to my door and asked for an email later sending me a “Roof Analysis” with pictures and typed detail stating my roof was near new condition with no damages adequate to any weather patterns. Furthermore, the guy engaged with my autistic son and talked to him as if they have been friends to find out Alex has an autistic uncle and actually cared outside his job stating the roof is a secondary focus, being the difference the world needs is first.
I would recommend this man to anyone for anything and will recommend him for all roofing inquiries I get.
[the contractor], you’ve got something here.
Had a man (Alex Jackson) last week come to our home to verify whether we had damage from a storm that passed while we were out of town. I am going to recommend him to everyone! Not only did he get on the roof (a day after surgery mind you!) but assured us the storm had missed our home then educated us the roof was nearing the end of its life and options. No pushy sales gimmick, just straight honesty! We have him going to my dad’s home this week. He was incredible, proved to us he was from the area and answered all of our questions FOR FREE. This is THE man you want on your roof!!!
