How high wind and surge affect a roof
Hurricane-force winds can lift shingles at ridges and edges, peel underlayment, and loosen flashing, vents, and ridge caps. Storm surge and heavy rain can drive water under damaged covering and into attics and wall cavities. After a storm like Isaias, look from the ground for missing or creased shingles, shingle pieces in the yard, bent gutters or vents, and new interior stains after the next rain. Stay off the roof yourself. A licensed local roofer can document what they find safely. See signs you may need a new roof and how to spot storm chasers.

Document damage now
- Take dated photos of the roof, gutters, siding, windows, fences, and any debris that came from the roof.
- Write down the storm date (October 9, 2026 for Panhandle landfall) and when you first noticed damage.
- Cover active leaks with a tarp only if it is safe, and keep receipts.
- Read your policy for claim deadlines. Only your insurer decides what is covered. A contractor can't promise coverage.
Beware of storm chasers
After a hurricane, out-of-town crews often knock on doors. Florida requires licensed contractors for roofing work — ask for the license number, check it with the state, get a written estimate, and never sign on the spot.[4] License numbers for the contractors in our network are on our contractor licensing page.
